Birmingham women 'biggest shopaholics'

A new survey has revealed Birmingham to be the shopping capital of Britain, with women here spending the most per year on fashion and grooming, as well as having the highest concentration of shopaholics.

Birmingham ladies spend an average of £1,813.56 every year on beauty and fashion products, which is a considerable £773.64 more than the national average of £1,039.92, the research from switching site uSwitch.com revealed.

The west midlands city also has the highest concentration of hard-core shopping addicts, according to the survey. Women in this group spend £96.26 more per month on fashion and beauty items than the average woman, but have a personal shopping debt of £8,092.97, funded by credit cards, store cards, overdrafts and loans, more than £7,000 higher than the average British woman.

Director of consumer policy for uSwitch.com Ann Robinson said: "Fat used to be a feminist issue, but it looks like it's been overtaken by debt.

"In today's celebrity obsessed society, where women emulate the lifestyles and shopping habits of their favourite fashionistas, it's not surprising that women are becoming more interested in size zero than zero per cent APR."

Ms Robinson added that shopping around for the best deals, taking advantage of zero per cent introductory credit card rates and switching to the cheapest utility providers could help women to enjoy the rush of a new purchase without racking up more unsecured debt.
